Subject: 20495/LocalTax/Conv&TradeCtrExpansion/Stadium Date: Fri, 5 Apr 1991 11:30:00 -0500 RESOLUTION NO. 20495 A RESOLUTION REQUESTING LEGISLATION TO ENABLE HAMILTON COUNTY AND/OR THE CITY OF CHATTANOOGA TO LEVY A ONE PERCENT (1%) LOCAL TAX ON RETAIL SALE OF PREPARED FOOD AND BEVERAGES TO FUND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS' SHARE OF THE CHATTANOOGA -HAMILTON COUNTY CONVENTION AND TRADE CENTER EXPANSION AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF A MULTIPURPOSE STADIUM. WHEREAS, the construction of a multipurpose stadium and the expansion of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Convention and Trade Center will provide a stimulus for the development of the South Central Business District, including the cleanup of the primary gateway into Chattanooga and Hamilton County, the creation of jobs through industrial development and the revitalization of the south end residential community as set forth in the South Central Business District Plan; and WHEREAS, the use of sales tax proceeds from the necessities of life such as groceries, durable goods and medicine is not construed to be an appropriate funding source for the public share of said projects; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, That the City Council does hereby request that the Hamilton County Legislative Delegation enact legislation to enable Hamilton County and/or the City of Chattanooga to levy a one percent (1%) tax on the retail sale of 0C prepared food and beverages, the proceeds of which will be used to fund the local governments' share of the cost of expanding the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Convention and Trade Center and constructing the stadium.
